The American Black Bear (Ursus Americanus) is the continent’s smallest bear species. Even so, they can weigh anywhere from 80lbs to around 500lbs! Black bear eat mostly vegetation but will scavenge when the opportunity arises. Despite their name, fur color can range from light blonde to brown and, of course, black. Black bears populate 41 states in the US, including Oregon. Make noise while hiking to prevent startling a bear. If you do see one, stand your ground, become as big as you can and make a lot of loud noise.
